Description

The DOTA PET Scan is a highly advanced and specialized functional imaging test designed primarily for the precise detection, staging, and management of Neuroendocrine Tumors (NETs).

How It Works:
Neuroendocrine tumors often have a high concentration of specific proteins called somatostatin receptors on their surface. During this test, a specialized radioactive tracer (such as Gallium-68 DOTATATE or DOTANOC) is administered. This tracer acts like a key, seeking out and binding directly to these somatostatin receptors. Once attached, the tumor cells emit a signal that is captured by the PET scanner, while the CT portion of the scan provides a detailed structural map of your body. This allows radiologists to see exactly where the tumors are located with exceptional clarity.

Key Clinical Benefits:

  • Pinpoint Accuracy: It is incredibly effective at locating small or hidden primary tumors that traditional imaging methods, like standard CTs or MRIs, might miss.
  • Comprehensive Staging: The scan provides a full-body evaluation to accurately determine if the disease is localized or if it has spread (metastasized) to other areas, such as the liver, bones, or lymph nodes.
  • Targeted Treatment Planning: By confirming the presence of somatostatin receptors, this scan is a crucial step in determining if a patient is a viable candidate for highly targeted treatments, such as Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy (PRRT).

Who Is This Scan For?
This scan is generally recommended by oncologists or endocrinologists for patients who are suspected of having, or have been diagnosed with, neuroendocrine tumors (such as carcinoid tumors, pancreatic NETs, or pheochromocytomas), and require precise staging or treatment monitoring.
